Cambridge, founded in 1773, is a picturesque community of about 2000 people located in southern Washington County. Much of the architecture is of the Victorian period with its downtown district on the National Historic Register. The town is named after the town in England and is known as the birthplace of "pie-a-la-mode" that was and still is served at the Cambridge Hotel. Despite its small size the village has a vibrant downtown district supported by an active chamber of commerce that hosts a well attended annual balloon festival. The main street serves as the thoroughfare for people heading to nearby communities of Greenwich and Saratoga and supports a number of activities throughout the year. One of the better known cultural hubs of the area is Hubbard Hall located in an 1878 opera house. Home to a wealth of theatre, dance, music, and visual arts, Hubbard Hall has something for everyone. During the warm weather months the farmers market is a big draw on Sundays at the Old Train Depot where local farmers offer a bountiful assortment of produce, honey, baked goods, florals, and other assorted goodies. Families will have no trouble finding things to do with a community library that offers an ongoing program of activities. Cambridge Central School serves over 6,500 residents from eight communities offering a solid foundation for learning.
